Raising Godly Children

VBS--Unique and Timeless
June 17, 2013 By M. J. Maynard

Recently, my local church capped off their Vacation Bible School week with an enthusiastic Sunday morning program.  We are blessed with a dedicated, creative children's pastor who creates her own original themes and lessons.  This year we were led back to medieval times to visit "The Kingdom of Kidzalot."  The focus was on the life of David, and every night the children learned about a different virtue in "The Code of Chivalry."  It was reported that 24 children gave their hearts to the Lord, making up a new army of brave Christian knights!

Vacation Bible School (VBS) is such a unique, timeless ministry.  My curiosity led me to an internet search, and I found some interesting history.  VBS has been around since the late 1800's, and its basic purpose has remained constant--to provide a summer Bible school for children, both churched and unchurched.  VBS is embraced by most denominations, and it is offered in many countries.

VBS is a prime venue of outreach for many reasons:

  • Most people a glad to have summer activities for their children.
  • VBS is cost-free and safe.
  • One week of VBS is a short-term commitment.
  • VBS reaches elementary-aged children at a time when their hearts are most tender and open to God's call.

Have you ever participated in this special ministry?  It takes a tremendous amount of time and effort to plan and operate a VBS.  There is a place for everyone--the decorators, the crafters, the cooks, the musicians, the teachers, and the list goes on.  Everyone who helps in any way deserves the credit when a child is led to Christ through a VBS.  It  is my prayer that you will be immeasurably blessed as you help in a VBS this summer.

If you have inspiring VBS stories, please share them in the comments, so that we can all be blessed through reading them.
