Sometimes God sends a special, tangible reminder that He loves and cares for us.
Have you ever had a special, tangible reminder that God loves you and is working in your life?
A few weeks ago, I packed up my table at a book fair after a bleak day of no sales and no customers even stopping to show interest. The event was held at a thrift store, so I took a moment to browse the used children's books before I left. The books were at a bargain price that day, and I was driven to search every shelf to find those hidden gems for my collection.
There, in a pile of books that had been knocked down to the floor, was a favorite book from my teaching days--Blackberries by Beverly Randell. This tiny volume is not common, and only educational service companies sell new copies. It is a charming, delightfully illustrated story about a bear family, and it really appeals to children. It is useful for teaching reading strategies to emergent readers because it is so easy to read, and yet has an interesting plot. Many, many first graders have read this story to me at school!
For me, finding this beloved book among the typical thrift-store children's selections was a special blessing. After a discouraging day, I couldn't help but feel that God put a copy of Blackberries right there in the store just for me. I will always cherish it as a reminder that He loves giving me good gifts. Someday I hope to put it to good use as I help my grandchildren learn to read. Every time it gets picked up I will remember that He loves and cares for me.
